Unit 4 Reading for Topics and Main Ideas
Reading for Topics
A topic is a word or phrase (a few words) which tells what something is about. For example, a friend may ask you, “What is this book about?” Your friend doesn’t want to know everything about the book. He or she just wants to know the topic.
Good comprehension begins with an understanding of the topic or subject. A topic is the general subject of the items in a list or the sentences in the paragraph. Therefore identifying the topic helps the readers understand whatever they read clearly.
A paragraph consists of related sentences focused on a certain idea about the topic of that paragraph. To identify the topic of the paragraph, you have to answer the question “What is the paragraph is mainly about?” That is every sentence in the paragraph gives details about that particular topic. Therefore, you should look for important words in the paragraph and try to figure out their relationship. That can lead you to the topic.
Always ask yourself while reading
What is the paragraph mainly about ?

Reading for Main Ideas
The main idea is the statement (a topic sentence) made about the topic which is supported by details. Therefore, the main idea of a paragraph is directly related both the topic and the details in the paragraph. It shows the single idea the writer have concerning the topic.
The main idea is usually stated in the first sentence of the paragraph. However, it can be placed anywhere in a paragraph or even unstated. To understand the main idea of the paragraph, you should look for the individual sentence containing the idea that can govern the whole message the writer is presenting. In other words, every sentence in the paragraph supports that idea.
If there is no such a sentence stated explicitly, you should read the paragraph carefully and try to think of a sentence of your own that represents the whole idea of the paragraph.
12
What is a Topic Sentence?
A topic sentence is a sentence that expresses the main idea of a paragraph. It is a general statement that covers all or most of the material in the paragraph. Locating the topic sentence in a paragraph is one of the most important reading skills.
To find a paragraph’s topic sentence, you should do the following :
1. Identify the topic of the paragraph by asking yourself, “Who or what is this paragraph about?”
2. Find the sentence that is a general statement telling you what you need to know about
the topic.
Where is the Topic Sentence Located ?
A topic sentence may be anywhere within a paragraph :
It can be the first sentence in the paragraph. The first sentence will be a general statement that will introduce a subject and will then be following by sentences that will support that statement in some important way.
It can be in the middle of a paragraph.
This will occur in two circumstances :
1. Sometimes, a paragraph begins with an introductory sentence that is meant to grab you
attention. It may be a very general statement that looks like a topic sentence than
changes direction. This sentence is the one that is explained in the rest of the paragraph, and it becomes the topic sentence.
2. You will also find a topic sentence in the middle of a paragraph when the paragraph
starts with a question.
13
A question will never be a topic sentence. Look for the answer to the question – this will be the topic sentence of the paragraph. Of course, if the answer to a question is “Yes” or “No”, this will not be your topic sentence. The explanation that follows this one – word answer will be the topic sentence.
However, a topic sentence can appear at the end of paragraph, either as a summary or a conclusion.
A summary will bring together all of the points made in the paragraph. A conclusion is where all of the points lead up to a final, important point.
What is the Main Idea ?
The Main idea is the central point of a paragraph. Very often, the main idea appears is one sentence- a sentence called the topic sentence. The rest of the paragraph contains sentences made up of specific ideas and details that support and explain the main idea.
General VS Specific Ideas
The main idea is a paragraph is a general idea. In contrast, the supporting information in a paragraph is made up of specific ideas and details. To improve your skill as finding main ideas, you need to practice distinguishing between general and specific ideas. The general idea includes all the specific ideas.

How to create an implied main idea
When you see that no sentence is general enough to include all of the others – that each sentence is too specific to cover all the others – the paragraph’s main idea is implied. Your task is to figure out the author’s main idea.
19
You can do so by asking two question :
1. What is the topic, or subject, of the paragraph? In other words, who or what is the
entire paragraph about ?
2. What is the main point made about the topic ?
To find the answer to the first question, you must see what subject is constantly being referred to.
This is the topic of the paragraph. [See the Main Ideas : Topics tutorial for more on this subject.]
Once you have found the topic, ask yourself, “What is the author’s main point about the topic?”
In other words, “What is the author saying about the topic?” Your answer should not be too general nor too specific. Try to make it broad enough to include all the supporting derails in the paragraph, and make sure you state it in a complete sentence. This is the implied main idea of the paragraph.
